When he isn’t writing or using his sense of humor to entertain his young nephews, Julian enjoys reading, experimental cooking in the kitchen, and watching the only sports he can keep up with: volleyball and soccer. Did I like Running With Lions overall? Yes.Do I believe this is a very authentic YA book about a diverse group of boys at soccer camp that deals with many important issues? Yes, and it certainly felt like one of the most authentic books I've read.But am I a fan of how teenage boys in a tightly knit group treat and talk to each other? ....not really.I'm not a teenaged boy and I've never been on a sports team, so I can't really tell how truly realistic the interactions between the characters (and the characters themselves) in Running With Lions are, but it really felt realistic. What I can tell instead is that some of that specifically made me uncomfortable, like when you're on public transport and overhear a group of boys talking to each other. It's clear they are good friends, and they aren't really doing anything, just something about them rubs you wrong, and you're really glad you and your friends are different.Reading this book was a bit like that at parts, though made better by how it's written from the point of view of one of those boys.That boy is Sebastian. Sebastian is:- close with his friends- bi, and- the epitome of the Mom-Friend.Not just for his circle of friends, but also for the ENTIRE SOCCER TEAM. He's the goalie, and while he's not officially captain yet, everybody on the team assumes he will be, and they treat him accordingly as they go to soccer training camp over the summer break.The responsibilty that comes with the expectations people have of him and how they rely on him to hold them up, and how Sebastian is struggling with that, is just one of the many important topics this book covers.Those topics also include: lasting effects of bullying, body image, acknowledging mistakes, accepting and finding help, how each friendship within a group of friends is different and has different needs and that's ok, how exes influence our lives, coming out, and many more.These are not main parts of the plot - this is definitely not a book about coming out or coming to terms with ones sexuality, or a book about bullying - but they were there and I appreciated them a lot.What is a big part of the plot is Sebastian's attraction to Emir, who used to be his best friend years ago but they lost contact, and who know joins the soccer team. Emir is British-Pakistani-American, Muslim, gay, and painfully shy, and his trouble connecting with the team is another big part of the plot.The most prominent part of the book is still Sebastian's attraction. Almost every single interaction with Emir (and many scenes were they don't even talk) are dominated by how aware he is of the other, and how much he is sexually attracted to him. To me that was exhausting at times.The writing overall was good.It was a bit silly at times, but that fit the mood and feeling, so I did not mind too much. What I did mind though was how there was a bit of a mismatch of the whole showing-and-telling thing. Sometimes things were shown too little/not clear enough/in too little words and not told at all, which confused me and threw me off, while at other times things were repeatedly told but never shown, which was equally confusing and made me question what was supposed to be true.I liked that there was a big cast of characters, many of who were great (I especially liked Hunter, Willie and Emir), and while there was an effort to give everyone personalities and background, I often couldn't remember who was supposed to be who again. That wasn't helped by how some names were extremely similar, like Jack and Zack, or Carl and Carly, and how it wasn't always explained who they were supposed to be (it took me half the book to realise Carly was Sebastian's sister.)Another thing I want to mention is that while the book is diverse and intersectional in many ways, it wasn't quite as non-heteronormative and non-cisnormative as I had hoped, which especially shows in the language used both by the characters and in the writing.Lastly I want to say is that I believe this book is important, and I believe it was not written for me, and adult woman, but for queer boys and it's definitely something I would recommend to queer teenage boys.
I never thought that, when I first met Julian on Bookstagram, I would one day hold a book with his name on it in my hands. But here we go. I am super proud of him and hope to have a whole stack of them one day.Running With Lions was a fluffy, light-hearted and cute story about friendship and love. It has a great many things to say about antiquated gender and beauty norms, and outdated myths about sexuality. It also proves that it is far from difficult to write a diverse story including more than just your token gay and another token black character.The book had a few minor flaws that I want to talk about. After roughly 100 pages I had grown weary of the characters, and their repetitive and meaningless banter. The dialogues could have used a bit more editing, in my opinion. Their triviality got on my nerves. Then there were Mason, the main character's best friend, and Grey, the only girl in the soccer camp. She has had a crush on Mason forever, but the way Mason treated her was outrageous. What bothered me even more, was how no one seemed to mind his shitty behaviour. Luckily, at the end of the book, the tide turned. Grey realised that he did not deserve her attention and Mason realised what an ass he was. I am glad that I kept reading, though. After those first 100 pages, I started enjoying it much more and finished the book in one go.I also got annoyed by how often I had to read a sentence along the lines of "and then he playfully punched him in his shoulder". What is it with all that punching? On one hand, this book promotes a group of soccer fanatics that are seemingly liberated of all this stereotypical manly behaviour...so why do they have to punch each other all the time? Why are they so obsessed with that? It got to a point where I wanted to punch someone (for real, not just for play) every time I had to read about it. Here, again, I think some more editing would have helped. I also had the feeling that a couple major plot points were a bit overdramatic - characters had made a mountain out of a molehill, and this tiny molehill now served as a turning point for the book, which rendered it a little unrealistic.Overall, this book is proud and positive. It shows a wide range of characters that are perfect because they are beautifully flawed. They love one another and always have each other's backs. The perfect summer read for everyone who enjoyed Love, Simon
Außer dass die vielen Charaktere manchmal etwas unübersichtlich waren, war dies ein unglaublich schönes und süßes Buch mit einer tollen realistischen Liebesgeschichte. Toll geschrieben! :)
Mir gefällt, dass die Sexualität der Charaktere ernst genommen wird, ohne dass sexuelle Szenen graphisch beschrieben werden. Sebastian's Angst vor der Zukunft kann ich außerdem sehr gut nachvollziehen. Das Ende habe ich besonders schön gefunden.
